Printing Points to Ponder on Posters

You’ve probably seen your share of posters that made you wonder why they ever got put up in the first place: posters that show nothing but a bottle of soda, an awkwardly-posed model, or a cliche buy line. Even media professionals can make glaring mistakes like these when creating posters. To make sure that you don’t do the same, here are a few do’s and don’ts when putting up posters for display:

1. Use text sparingly. If it’s longer than two sentences, you probably should revise it. Your viewers only have a few seconds to look at your poster anyway. Remember, a meaningful line or two would be easier to remember than an entire paragraph explaining the virtues of your product.

2. Make sure that the poster fits the display location. Check where your poster will get maximum exposure. For example, why display your poster at the left side of a building when there’s a train station at the right side of it? And if you’re going to place it high on a building facade, make sure it can be seen despite comparably tall buildings around it. If your poster will directly face the sun AND your viewers, take into account the glare that will bounce off the shiny plastic surface of your poster. Not only would your poster be painful to look at, the glare can temporarily impair vision– a dangerous thing if you’re going to display your poster along a busy street. Choose a matte finish for your poster, or display it at a different angle.

3. Talk with your print shop specialist for display options. Indoor displays can be printed on almost any material, but outdoor posters have to be printed on durable substrates such as vinyl to withstand the elements. It would also be best to get colorfast or UV-resistant inks to prevent fading and lengthen the lifespan of your poster. And if you’re in a heavily polluted area, ask your print shop specialist if their materials can withstand a little acid rain.

Just as any skill in life, some people are better at poster designs than others. If you feel that designing is not your forte, don’t worry– Los Angeles printing shops usually have in-house design specialists whom you could consult with for a small fee. But If you’re looking for reliable print shops who specialize in poster printing Los Angeles should be at the top of your shopping list.
