Duties of a Mediator to Reach Agreement
A mediator must make sure that both of the disputing parties will reach the right kind of agreement that is amenable for both sides. It is also the job of the mediator to keep the order of the mediation process while the discourse is on-going. He must allow sufficient avenue for each of the parties to express their views on the issue. The mediator must know when to proceed with the mediation, and when to call for rest. Before taking on the responsibilities of mediating for the dispute, the mediator must study long and hard to have the adequate amount of knowledge on the nature and background of the issue being disputed. It is also important that the mediator knows his own boundaries, and that it’s his duty to keep himself from rendering biased opinions and prejudicial statements. When the mediator comes to the point when he feels like he is already becoming incompetent, it is also his duty to formally inhibit from the said mediation process.
